Rivers Edge Church, Spokane, WA

Matt & Abby Deisen

Having grown up in the Seattle area, I moved to Portland to attend law school at Lewis and Clark College, which is where I got connected to Westside: A Jesus Church. Having served for years as a volunteer leader, I was eventually pulled on staff shortly after graduating law school, and I both pastored and practiced for several years in Portland before moving to Spokane, Washington to plant River’s Edge alongside my friend and co-planter Matt Karsh.

Rivers Edge is a small church that officially launched in September 2017. Currently located just north of downtown Spokane in one of Washington’s poorest neighborhoods, our church is about 50% college students, and is somewhere between 50-100 on any given Sunday. This small community has already grown into something deeper and richer than we anticipated, and we have been blown away with the genuine passion and heartfelt hunger that this community has for Jesus and the Kingdom of God. We could not be more excited about who we are and where we’re headed, and we have seen God’s hand in provision, guidance, and inspiration at every step along the way.

Our vision for Spokane is to join in the amazing work that God is doing in renewing the city and calling people to Himself. Our hope is that Rivers Edge will be a community full of passionate followers of Jesus that catch the vision of what God is up to and who partner with Him in a multiplying movement. We want to see disciples who know how to make disciples, missional communities that know how to grow and multiply, and eventually we want to plant more churches that know (and desire) to plant more churches in Spokane and the nations. Our goals have far less to do with overall numbers, and far more to do with creating something deep and rich which carries the seeds of multiplication.

Why did you join the A Jesus Church Network?

I was baptized at Westside: A Jesus Church years ago. It was where I first found community and learned how to serve. The A Jesus Church Network taught me how to pastor and preach, and without the support of the A Jesus Church Network, our church would have never been planted. The dream would have failed before we even got off the ground. The A Jesus Church Network is home for us, and we wouldn’t exist without it. It has informed our vision, values, DNA, and friendships from the very beginning, and we could not be more excited to be part of this team!
